Dünnschichttransistoren werden aufgebaut, indem die Dünnfilme eines aktiven Halbleiters, daher der Name, sowie eine dielektrische Schicht und einige metallische Kontakte auf einem Glassubstrat geschichtet werden. Glas wird verwendet, weil es nicht leitend ist und eine ausgezeichnete optische Klarheit aufweist. Es ist auch nicht reaktiv gegenüber den bei der Halbleiterverarbeitung verwendeten Chemikalien. Im Gegensatz dazu ist beim Aufbau eines typischen Transistors das verwendete Substrat ein Halbleitermaterial, üblicherweise ein Siliziumwafer.
Dünnschichttransistoren werden hauptsächlich in LCD-Displays verwendet, weshalb Glas als Substrat verwendet wird. Die TFT-Technologie wird auch in digitalen Radiographiedetektoren mit direkter und indirekter Erfassung verwendet, die in der medizinischen Radiographie verwendet werden. AMOLED-Bildschirme (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) weisen ebenfalls eine TFT-Schicht auf.
